This translation project comprises two parts:selected translation of a historical book An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz(Chapter 3 and Chapter 4)and a critical commentary on the significance of the project and the translation strategies employed in the project. The chosen chapters offer a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveal how Native Americans actively resisted the expansion of the US Empire for centuries. In the chapters chosen for this project,Dunbar-Ortiz,challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows the unbelievable sufferings that the Indigenous peoples suffered in history, which provides the readers with new understanding about the history of the United States. In the critical commentary, introduction to the source text and the translation project is given and the theoretical guidance and strategies employed in the translation project is elaborated.Under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's theory of Functional Equivalence in the whole process of translation, great attention is paid to keep the functional equivalence between the source text and the translated text.To attain this goal, corresponding strategies are adopted both at lexical and syntactic level:a)using Chinese idioms;b)conversion;c)transliteration;d)following the original syntactic order;e)reinventing sentence structures;f)turning phrases into clauses;g)transforming sentence voices. This translation project has some realistic meaning and research value. On one hand, the project is expected to function as reference for the scholars in this field and to arouse more attention to the translation of historical texts;on the other hand,it proves that Functional Equivalence is quite useful in the translation of historical literature.
