This thesis is a report on a translation practice. The source text for the translation is selected from the book Tuesday Nights in 1980,written by Molly Prentiss. As a popular novel,Tuesday Nights in 1980 has attracted thousands of readers since it was officially published in 2017.Molly Prentiss has excellent skills in describing psychological activity of each character in the book,so readers can easily identify with the main characters and develop interests in this book. Therefore, the book is of high value to read.Under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, the thesis analyses the translation practice. The translation practice has selected the prelude and the first part of Tuesday Nights of 1980 as the source text.In the process of translation, the author of this report encounters many problems, such as the understanding of each character and the artist's psychological activities.Under the guidance of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the author of this report has solved most of the difficult problems by adopting translation methods such as amplification, free translation and part of speech conversion. The author of this report makes every effort to make the translation fluent, avoiding translationese and catering to the reading habits of target readers.Through the translation practice, the author of this report deeply understands that translation is not just translated by "word for word",but should be connected with the readership and social development.Translators should adopt appropriate methods to translate the source text.Only in this way can the translation achieve the goal of functional equivalence, that is,the readers of the target language can have the same feelings when they read the book as the source text readers do.
