After long-time preparation and market research,Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press has introduced a set of literary classics in simplified version from Macmillan Publishing Limited to the majority of students in China.Precious Bane is one of the works, and it is the most famous work of British female novelist Mary Webb.Mary Webb studied at a school in Nangang.Married to a teacher H.Webb in 1912,she spent most of her time in Shropshire, where her novels were set.Mary Webb's novels are lyrical which emphasize the mountains and rivers of Shropshire and the people who lived there with strong brushstrokes. The love of nature and the fate of the protagonists in her novels are reminiscent of Thomas Hardy's novels in the late 19 th century.Mary Webb's creative style is unique and extremely innovative. However, her novels fail to achieve the full and mature tragedy state of Hardy's works. In the translation process, the translator is guided by Dr.Eugene Nida's theory of "Functional Equivalence".In his theory of "four equivalences",the most widely used are "Lexical Equivalence" and "Syntactic Equivalence".This translation report falls into four parts. The first part analyzes and introduces the original text, including the author, author's writing style, the content and characteristics of the work, and also estimates the difficulties that may be encountered in the translation process. The second part introduces this translation report, including the background, the significance, structure and the process of the translation practice under the guidance of "Functional Equivalence" theory. The third part is the characteristic analysis of the translation text. The translator, under the guide of "Functional Equivalence" theory, uses plenty of examples to analyze the translation process from the points of lexical and syntactic. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the harvests in the translation process as well as the remaining problems. The translator chooses this book to translate, firstly because of his or her great interest in this novel.Secondly, the book helps the translator understand the social status, especially the difficulty of countrymen at that time.It is challenging to choose such a realistic novel to translate and introduce it to China.
