The source text of this translation project is selected from two key chapters in The New Urban Crisis: How Our Cities Are Increasing Inequality,Deepening Segregation, and Failing the Middle Class—and What We Can Do about It.The book is authored by Richard Florida, who is an American urbanist focusing on social and economic theory. It analyzes the two outstanding problems exposed with urbanization in the United States, namely, inequality and division. The translator respects to help the Chinese better understand the root causes for various development problems facing China today.Based on the description of difficulties in the translation project and the discussion of its background and significance, the writer selectively carries out empirical analysis on the cases to summarize the pros and cons.On the basis of the text typology theory and the cohesion and coherence theory, the report focuses on three levels: the first is the implicit background knowledge. The writer adopts two means to deal with it,that is,grasping the core content or highlighting the background knowledge. The second is the accurate translation of words. The solution is being accurate and faithful to deal with the terminology,or relying on the essential meaning to extend word meaning. The third, the cohesion of discourse, which can be dealt with with two kinds of textual grammatical means——anaphora and conjunction in accordance with the logic relationship of the source text.
