Chinese Translation Of Long Sentences In Wonderful Adventures Of Mrs.Seacole In Many Lands

The source text is selected from an autobiography of a black nurse Mary Seacole.She worked as an inn-keeper and as a doctress,who helped a lot of people during the Crimean War.She suffered racial discrimination in her life or work,and the language is of an air of irony.Meanwhile,The text is of documentary and literary characteristics.It is found that the long sentences in the excerpt account for two thirds of the selected text through text analysis.They are of multiple categories,and this thesis mainly studies the translation of English long sentences to Chinese.Long sentence has always been one of the difficulties in translation,as long sentence has rich structure level,complex logical relations,and multiple clauses.Analyzing the translation of English long sentence into Chinese,we should first understand the differences between English and Chinese.English is a hypotactic language,while Chinese is a paratactic language.During the process of sentence-making,English emphasizes the means of connection,but Chinese emphasizes the logical relations,that is,connecting sentences by meaning.English long sentences are analyzed with the guidance of Chesterman's translation norms.One is expectancy norms,and the other is professional norms which include accountability norms,communication norms and relation norms.English long sentences in the translation project are analyzed,giving definition,and defining categories: simple long sentence,compound long sentence,complex long sentence and compound complex long sentence.Examples are cited to analyze the structure of English long sentence.Based on the two translation principles,readers expectancy and faithful translation,the four translation methods are proposed,which are plain sequence,backward sequence,splitting,and synthetic method.Finally,these principles and methods are used to guide the translation of English long sentences.The principles and methods can deal with the translation of English long sentences through translation practice.
