With the increasingly frequent international exchanges, translation plays a crucial role in the communication between cultures as the most important means of conveying information.Sentences are the basic unit of a discourse. Proper translation of sentences lays a firm foundation for discourse translation, which is necessary capacity of a translator. However, the analysis and translation of long sentences is one of the most difficult parts in C-E translation. In this thesis, Maersk: Crisis or Chance? was selected from the journal Shipping Exchange Bulletin as source text to explore the specific translation skills of Chinese long sentences with the intention to make the translation conform to English writing expression to the largest extent based on faithfulness to the source text. The thesis focuses on the translation of long sentences in Maersk: Crisis or Chance?, starting with an explicit description of task background, translation process and case analysis. Preparation before translating and quality control are displayed in the part of process description, followed by the part of case analysis where linguistic differences between Chinese and English are first analyzed, such as parataxis and hypotaxis, topic-prominent and subject-prominent, as well as bamboo-like structure and tree-like structure. And combined with specific examples, this part presents that translators are expected to pay attention to nominalization, explicitation of logical relation, distinguishing main and subordinate clauses, restructuring of meaning units and employment of cohesive ties in the process of coping with the translation of Chinese long sentences. The process of translation is summarized in the last part in which full preparation before translating and repeated revisions after translating are emphasized, and meanwhile the limitation of this thesis and expectation of future study are pointed out.
