The most significant contribution of the Middle Ages to the human civilization was the emergence of universities and its benefit to the human society. The function of universities was to continuously provide both high quality and professional talents to society, so the process of teaching and learning Canon law in universities was particularly noteworthy. Along with the rise of universities and the revival of Roman law, the Canonical collections and development of talent thrived. The goal of this thesis is to study the status of Canon law education in the medieval universities.This thesis is divided into three parts; Part one discusses the background and reason for the rise of medieval universities, while also introducing and exploring the relationship and coexistence between Canon law and Roman law. Part two examines the curriculum, textbooks, teaching methods, teachers, students, examination systems and degree systems of Canon law education from the Twelfth and Fifteenth Century. The Third part summarizes and commentates on the characteristics of Canon law education in medieval universities, discussing the role that Canon law in the medieval universities played to the western society and legal tradition.
