With the old-age population constantly increasing, the service work for the elderly is becoming more and more onerous. The government alone can no longer meet the mounting material and cultural needs of the elderly. And social organizations have stood out to play an important role in the social service system for the elderly and have exerted great influence. The success of a social organization relies on the talent and vision of leaders. Western scholars have already attached importance to leaders of social organizations, with quite a few results. By contrast, there's little research on this topic in China. The theories from western countries are based on western culture background, thus can not explain phenomena and problems in China. Consequently, the issue this paper is going to study can not refer to existing literature or make assumptions and conduct quantitative case study based on existing theories. Therefore, the basic targets of this paper is to discover problems, put forward concepts and theories. The grounded theory method is adopted in this paper.First of all, this paper investigates into the social service organization for the elderly in Hangzhou inner city in order to get a preliminary understanding of the basic information and professional background of their leaders. Then, through the combination of case study and multi-case study, by grounded theory method, this paper explores the development path of these leaders and analyzes their professional background, motivations of establishing these organizations, their ability characteristics and the challenges they face. The professional background is closely related to their action of setting up organizations in that their previous working experiences contribute to their leadership and management. The leaders' motivations of establishing organizations include intrinsic and extrinsic these two aspects. The abilities characters can be analyzed through professional knowledge, quality and ability, service skills these three aspects. And the main challenges facing these leaders are finance, staff, and management issues. This paper makes a preliminary theoretical generalization and research on the development path of leaders of social service organization for the elderly and constructs a theoretical model for it.In future study, we'll conduct research on more samples and enrich the connotation of concepts and scope of this paper through a more specific comparison of data and deeper investigation. In addtion,further study of the leaders of the old social services organizations can combine a variety of research methods,the combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods is also the direction of future research.
