Ever since with its invention, the controversy to the technology of genetically modified organism has been accompanying with its contributions. The genetically modified food has currently entered the lives of consumers, but its safety and supervision challenge has become an issue which needs to be urgently addressed. In other countries, a set of sane policies and laws against the abuse of the genetically modified food has been established. However in China, it is still a blank space in the laws and regulations on confining the overuse or abuse of the genetically modified food. This harsh and urgent situation has greatly caused the consequences of our genetically modified food industry and has weakened the competitiveness of our genetically modified food in the international market. Furthermore, it also has caused lack of protection to the fundamental rights and interests of consumers. Therefore the author decides to study and analyze the U.S. voluntary labeling system for genetically modified food, with regards to the status quo of our genetically modified food labeling system and its shortcomings, to explore useful experiences as our reference, and to look for the enlightenment to improve our genetically modified food labeling system.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is the introduction, mainly elaborates the research background and purpose of the research, the content of the research, the methodology used and innovation points in this research. Chapter two is to explore various modes of existing laws and regulations against labeling of genetically modified food at the global level. Chapter three is to focus the analysis on the voluntary labeling system of genetically modified food in U.S.A. Firstly, it elaborates the U.S. voluntary labeling system of genetically modified food, and secondly, it analyzes the rationale on why U.S. does not implement mandatory labeling system of genetically modified food. Chapter four summarizes the current situation of the labeling system of genetically modified food in China, combining with its current development progress, then it further elaborates the shortcomings of the legislation of our genetically modified food labeling system, and finally it intends to refer to the successes of the U.S. genetically modified food labeling system, to improve the labeling system of genetically modified food in China.At the end, this thesis concludes the entire research, and aims to improve the development of the labeling system of genetically modified food in China through the successful experiences of the labeling system of genetically modified food in U.S.
