The Chinese Female Soldiers In 1960s And 1970s

"On ne nait pas femme,on le devient." Simone de Beauvoir wrote this sentence in her book Le Deuxieme Sexe which was published in the late 1940s.She gave the opinion that all feminine qualities are created by the male-centered culture.With the flourish of the second wave of feminism movement in the late 1960s,the concept of Gender was becoming popular.Gender is not only a physiological concept,it's also an analysis category which can be used to analyze the formation of feminine qualities and the persistence of masculine power.Shaping and cultivating female is a long lasting process.And it's also a result from interactions among psychical,cultural and social elements.In the specific historical period,this process was also influenced by power,ideology and political intention.From the perspective of gender shaping,the female soldier in 1960s-1970s as the research object has the particularity in aspect of time and space.From the aspect of time,1960s and 1970s in Chinese history were special.In this period,the revolutionization and de-gendering tendency were encouraged.The female image at that time was entirely different from the traditional one.From the aspect of space,the army is an independent and closed system which has a set of discipline.This thesis sorts out the personal experience of the female soldiers who joined the army from 1960s to 1970s,and try to reappear the process of gender shaping.According to the dictating materials,this process can be divided into three parts:becoming a female soldier,learn to be a female soldier,pose as a female soldier.In the first part,by reappear the reason and process of joining in the army,I try to analyze the social stratification hidden behind the principles of female soldier selection.In the second part,I pay attention to how the power changes and disciplines these female soldiers.In the last part,by observing the relationship between male and female soldiers,I find the reason why this female group can get rid of the weak position and become an elite group.
