A Case Study About Rational-emotive Therapy In College Students’ Interpersonal Communication Barriers

In our country, students in universities generally are faced with the barriers of interpersonal communication in different levels, which has drawn more and more attentions. Among Chinese academic circle, the research of college students’ interpersonal barriers is more on theoretical research, while in the social work the practical research of university students’ human communication obstacle is far from enough.This study adopts the method of qualitative research, and guided by rational emotive therapy.And a sophomore in Wuhan who is facing interpersonal barriers as the object of case study. By helping the client to improve his learning, the author gained the client’s trust, after that, the author debates with the client so as to help the client change his irrational beliefs. After a period of intervention, the clients’ irrational beliefs had changed,and the interpersonal obstacles had overcome.The results show that: firstly, under the guidance of Rational-Emotive Therapy, case study can transform college students’ irrational beliefs on interpersonal communication and it also redress clients’ view on themselves and others, and increase their confidence.Secondly, under the guidance of Rational-Emotive Therapy, it changed college students’ communicative behavior, but the improvement isn’t significant in short time. Thirdly, as for college students who come across interpersonal barriers and learning problems,overcoming interpersonal obstacles and improving the problems of learning have mutual influence and can promote each other. Fourth, compared to group work, case work in which rational emotive therapy is helpful to college students’ interpersonal interaction in the transition of the irrational beliefs, while group work is helpful for the improvement of the college students’ interpersonal behavior and skills acquisition. This article also put forward three assistant that is aimed at applying rational emotional therapy in college students’ interpersonal barriers:(1) Taking the client’s demand as the breakthrough of the intervention.(2) Argue with irrational beliefs of clients in the real situation.(3)Combine case work with group work,and case work first.
