Innovation is the soul of the national progress, and the inexhaustible power of national's prosperity. American research universities have accomplished remarkable achievements on innovative personnel training. The number of American research universities accounts for just 6% in all U.S. colleges, But they have published a lot of technical papers, have produced numerous Nobel laureate. That is closely related with the constantly cultivate creative talents of American research universities. This paper tries to study present situation and characteristic, mode of training and training experience on cultivating creative personnel of American research universities, combining with China's national conditions. Firstly, this paper introduced the concept and characteristics of innovative talents, and discusses the theoretical basis of innovative talents:innovative investment theory and creativity education theory. Secondly, the paper discussed the patterns and characteristics of American research universities. With professional setting and course design, teaching mode and learning methods,and the training objectives, curriculum system, teaching subject, study the characteristics of subject, etc Thirdly, this paper focuses on the part of the paper, the part studies the innovation talents training experience in American research university, separately studying from the management system, teaching mode, safeguard mechanism three aspects.such as the American research universities' elaborate teaching way, the term system, teaching environment, teachers'construction, ideological guarantee, management experience of safeguard etc. Finally, this paper combined with actual situation in China, aiming at the deficiency of innovative personnel training in China research university, put forward some countermeasures and Suggestions:the reasonable entrance system of innovative talents in China is the effective premise; Form our guarantee mechanism of innovative talents cultivation; Reform the evaluation system of teachers and students of our universities.The cultivation of innovative talents is not the era of knowledge economy development needs, but also it is the inevitable choice of our universities. Rationally using innovative talent training model of successful experience of American research universities, will eventually help our universities to cultivate innovative talents.
