| With the drastically rapid development of Chinese economy and improvement of living conditions, a wide variety of engineering projects with ill quality arise, which makes a huge gap between engineering quality and people’s requirements. Accordingly, The necessity for the prospective engineers to accept social responsibility education has been more and more prominent. With the very purpose, Ministry of Education indeed launched the Excellence Engineer Fostering Plan in 2011. Therein, one of the focuses is to improve college students’ quality education and social responsibility education.To help push the Excellence Engineer Fostering Plan of higher engineering education forward, the present work attempts to investigate the current situations of social responsibility education in universities and to obtain solutions for the existing problems. To such an end, the training schemes at four key Chinese universities have been analyzed and compared with specific attention paid to the common sense related courses since they are believed to closely related to the social responsibility education. Survey on college students at Tianjin University has also been conducted to obtain their knowledge on social responsibility and their attitudes and acceptance for education of the kind. It has been revealed that the universities have paid more attention to professional knowledge and effective approaches to improve the sense of engineering related social responsibility is still lacking. What is worse, many college students do not have the sense of engineering relevant social responsibility even though they believe delivering such lectures is necessary. Situations of education on social responsibility in universities of some developed countries have also been introduced and analyzed briefly. Some inspiring suggestions for social responsibility education in Chinese universities have been proposed subsequently. |
