This dissertation is based on the cycle of ecology to the study of higher education. The cycle of ecology thought reflects the species in ecosystems and species, between species and the environment, the relationship between all species in ecosystems survive a relationship, the relationship of material circulation and energy flow.Compare with traditional Pedagogy research, the Ecology of Education pay more attention to the social element effecting the education instead of focusing on the Education inside, through ecological perspective. However, current Education Ecology investigations ignore the social function of Education. The education should meet social needs, not the other way round. This dissertation focuses on the higher education because the higher education is the final step exporting human resources and draws a lot of attention. This paper investigated the higher education meets the social needs or not through three dimensions, which are educational function, educational structure, and educational distribution of locations. Three results were obtained. One is that the educational function should base on exporting human resources, and the human resources type and the major formulation of higher education should meet social needs. Another one is about the educational structure, which has been focused on the “self-dependence” of colleges and universities. The result is that the “self-dependence” should not be equal to the “independence”, and should base on the realization of the educational function. This has been misunderstood in present educational research. The third result is that the balanced development of higher education is conducive to the whole target of education, thereby conducive to realize the educational function. The imbalance of regional development of education should be changed, in order to save educational resources and maximize the educational function. Towards to the above questions, five chapters were shown. The first chapter introduces the research background and significance, systemically and concisely. The research status of the Ecology of Education was also presented. The second chapter discussed about the definition and construction of the ecosystem in the Ecology. The ecosystem is constituted by communities as well as the energy flow and circulation of materials through the communities. This chapter describes the method and approach to the energy flow, various forms of the materials circulation. Through analyzing the flow of energy and the process of circulation, the form and purpose of the ecological cycle were obtained. The form is that the predation interactions between the species deliver energy and matter, and the purpose is to make the system sustainable. The third chapter is about the born of Educational Ecology and the study of the present situation and problems of China's higher education. Higher education is a subsystem of the Educational Ecosystem. Firstly the eco tope of China's higher education was recognized and described on global aspect. Then the circulation mode of higher education ecosystems was determined, while the scales of cultural, political and economic factors were evaluated. Then the importance of the circulation of the higher education ecosystem was demonstrated for function and structure aspects of the higher education ecosystem. Thereby the regional developmental problems and environmental problems were analyzed. The fourth chapter discussed the real problems in the higher education ecosystem of current China, including the regional developmental imbalance as well as the drawbacks of the educational function and structure. The regional developmental imbalance is driven by the evolution of developing environment, while the drawbacks of the educational function and structure came from the drawback of the integrated environment. The ecological environment of higher education contains several aspects, including the natural environment, the social environment, and the institutional environment. The balance of ecological environment of higher education depends on the communication between the ecosystem and the environment. More specifically, the balance of the function and the structure determines the balance of the ecosystem. In this work, the primary target is the influence from social environment towards to the ecosystem of higher education, and the suggestion for optimizing the ecological environment and ecological structure were provided. The fifth chapter presents the conclusions. The ecological environment, ecological functions, and ecological structure of China's higher education as well as regional development problems were also summarized, at the view of ecological circulation, and gives the corresponding suggestions.
