Research On American Modern University System Since World War?:University Governance Reformation Perspective

University system, the foundation of university's internal and external development and operations, becomes the fundamental factor of influencing university's development. In recent years, experts and scholars in our country increasingly pay attention to modern university system, making it a hot topic in the higher education research field. Nowadays, higher education in our country is in the face of not only variety of resources and opportunities, but also great challenges and a series of problems. We need to learn and draw lessons from developed countries about experiences of developing and constructing modern university system. As a leading role around the world, there are lots of top universities in the United States, which makes it become the focus of our research. Therefore, in this paper, the author discusses both the internal and external change and innovations of American's modern university system since the Second World War, trying to grasp its intrinsic development rules and provides useful experience for building and constructing the higher education in our country.Except for the “Abstract” and “Introduction”, there are five parts in this thesis:First, the author discusses the reformation of American university governance idea after the WW?from the aspect of how American university utilize the theory of new public management.Second, the author discusses the influences exerted to the development of the American modern university by three forces: the federal government, state government and market, finding their roles in forming the American university external governance structure.Third, the author discusses the final formation of common governance structure in American modern universities from the power changes of the governing board, the professor, and the president.Fourth, the author respectively discusses three governance examples from three aspects: background, specific content, and significance.Finally, the author tried to find the characteristics of American modern university system changes after the WW ? from four aspects: governance idea, external governance structure, internal governance structure, and relationship between universities.
