| Make the students become the masters of their study and cultivate learning ability are important in the new round of geography curriculum reform. And the ability to think of the geography and the ability to use graphs are parts of it. Geographical subject has the characteristics of spatial, regional and comprehensive. A lot of content must use charts in order to express clearly. The new textbook increases the number of geographic charts compared with the old teaching materials. Geographical diagram is a kind of expression way which is equal to the text narration not only the "drawings" or "illustrations". It is very important to strengthen the analysis and research of geographic charts. Image thinking ability and logical thinking ability are the necessary thinking ability for people to study. And they are always interrelated and complement each other. Because of all this, we choose the topic of chart teaching and geography thinking ability training. The purpose is to understand the present situation of high school geography teaching in the use of graphics to cultivate students’ geographical thinking ability through investigation and analysis. On the basis of analyzing of the training present situation, we put forward the corresponding training strategy. In order to illustrate how to use the chart to cultivate students’ geography thinking ability, I complete instructional design using the charts in the Human Geography Textbook. And I combine with practical teaching. Specific content as follows:1. To understand the problems existing in the cultivation of thinking ability in geography teaching in high school, we conducted a questionnaire survey and a simple conversation with the students and teachers of The First High School of Xiang Cheng.Analysis of the questionnaire for teachers, we can draw the following conclusions:(1) Teachers pay more attention to the cultivation of geographical thinking ability.(2) The vast majority of teachers think that the chart culture the imagination ability, observation ability and the ability to compare first. Ignore drawing ability and other abilities.(3) Some teachers’ teaching methods are old, so it is hard to realize the ability of using graphics teaching to cultivate the thinking ability.Through the analysis of the students’ geographical thinking ability test volume we can draw the following conclusions:(1) some students are not aware of the importance of geographic charts.(2) Most of the students can not reflect geographical things in the mind in the form of chart.(3) There is few drawing training in actual teaching.(4) Most of the students think that their judgment reasoning ability is not high, and they can not use the framework to summarize and summarize the knowledge.(5) The order of which most of the students do the geography chart topic is directly to the destination, and there are a few students can not start.(6) High school students’ thinking ability can be improved with age or education level.(7) In high school, the difference of geographical thinking ability between male and female students was not significant.2. This paper puts forward the countermeasures to cultivate the students’ ability of geographical thinking. As follows: Cultivating students’ consciousness of understanding chart, and drawing ability training targeted; Focus on the formation of psychological map; Decomposition, combination and comparison of graphs to improve students’ reasoning ability; Using teaching methods that mainly in cognitive based on symbolic sign.3. This paper carries on the teaching design by part of the《Earth’s Atmosphere》in required Human Education Version of the second chapters. We use the teaching design to cultivate the students’ geographical image thinking ability and geographical logical thinking ability. Image thinking ability and logical thinking ability are related to each other. These two abilities are reflected in each other in the teaching designs. This paper hopes to provide some advice and reference for the geography teaching.4. The innovation of this paper lies in a quantitative study on the cultivation of students’ thinking ability in practical teaching. And this paper puts forward a graph teaching strategy aiming at the existing problems. And then use these measures to complete the chart teaching design.
