The Research Of University Instructors' Ability To Be Empathic With The Students

Empathy is not only a kind of interpersonal communication but also a basic ability to communicate. At first, researchers focus on the function of empathy in psychological counseling, nowadays more and more researchers have found empathy has important value in our life, such as in management, education, public service and so on. Properly apply empathy can make communication more smooth, make management more elastic,and promote the establishment of human relations, etc. While the counselors in colleges and universities play an important role in students' management, ideological and political education, their empathy ability appears to count for more positive significance. At present there is no particular scale and empirical research on college counselors' empathy ability.Therefore, this study aimed on the empathy ability of university counselors, trying to construct the structure of college counselors' empathy ability, preparing for survey questionnaires, and then investigating the characteristics of college counselors' empathy ability, finally attempting to analyze the relationship between empathy ability and personality characteristics of university counselors. The main results of this research as follows:(1)Empathy ability of university counselors is divided into three dimensions:sense of empathy, comprehension of empathy and empathy feedback.(2)Test results of formal measuring show that the questionnaire has good reliability and validity.(3)The situation of university counselors' empathy ability is:a.Empathy ability of university counselors on the whole is at a good level.b.There exist noticeable differences in gender, age, professional qualifications etc.c.There are no noticeable differences in work experience, educational background,the number of their students etc.(4)Empathy ability of university counselors is related to its personality,self-esteem:a.Empathy ability of university counselors is significant correlates with personality traits(conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism, agreeableness).b.Empathy ability of university counselors is significant correlates with self-esteem.
