At present, higher vocational colleges run by the local people are not providing effective classroom teaching on the whole. They have run into problems like teachers’ lack of enthusiasm in teaching as well as students’ lack of motivation in learning. Therefore the improvement of classroom teaching becomes the key to advancing the quality of talent cultivation in civilian-run higher vocational colleges. In order to accurately understand the present situation of classroom teaching in civilian-run higher vocational colleges, and accordingly propose measures for improvement, the paper is based on the case analysis of G higher vocational colleges, aiming at a comprehensive solution after a detailed study on the case.In this paper,we first use methods such as questionnaire survey and classroom observation to acquire a deep understanding of both “teaching” and “learning” in G college, through which we figure out the major problems of classroom teaching in civilian-run higher vocational colleges. For instance, the students hold a negative attitude toward learning;they have little interests and take no initiative in learning. As for the teachers, they are unsatisfied with students’ class performance and fail to build a harmonious relationship with them in class because they believe there is a huge difference between the learning ability of students in civilian-run higher vocational colleges and those in undergraduate universities or state-run higher vocational colleges. The paper probes into these problems from both the aspects of teachers and students, hoping to uncover the reasons for the ineffective classroom teaching in civilian-run higher vocational colleges. And at the meantime based on the collection of research materials about encouraging education from both at home and abroad,it summarizes the connotation, characteristics and value of encouraging education, trying to make a theoretical elaboration on the positive role it has played in the improvement of classroom teaching in terms of the classroom atmosphere,teacher-student relationship, students’ interests in class,as well as their initiatives in learning with the employment of Maslow’s theory in hierarchy of needs,Erikson’s theory of personality development and Robert Rosenthal’s expectation theory. The theoretical analysis is followed by an overall description of encouraging education and the actual effects ithas gained in G college’s classroom teaching. In the last part of this paper some suggestions about the implementation of encouraging education are made to improve the classroom teaching in civilian-run higher vocational colleges, namely,to have rational thinking and perceptual expression;focus on detail and perseverance;combine criticism with encouragement, verbal judgment with nonverbal judgment;learn about when, where and how to carry out encouraging education with the joint-efforts of colleges and families. The paper argues that the introduction of encouraging education to civilian-run higher vocational colleges has been proved effective and received remarkable effects in their classroom teaching, that it plays a positive role both theoretically and practically.Hopefully this paper will help pave the way for the further development of classroom teaching in civilian-run higher vocational colleges for the purpose of producing more and better vocational talents for the country and society.
