Rural elementary school students have fewer opportunities to touch society, so extracurricular reading is important way to acquire knowledge and broaden their horizon, extend and complement classroom learning. In the era of traditional media, Paper is the only source of extracurricular reading. The researches on extracurricular reading of elementary school students are mainly that for reading ways and means of traditional paper media. With scientific and technological progress and development, life, work and study style has tremendous changes, life and study style of elementary school students has been changed too. Traditional paper media is not the only option for elementary school students in extracurricular reading. TV, mobile phones, computers and other electronic media products also contain various reading materials for elementary school students. Compared with reading mode of traditional paper media, electronic media reading mode has unparalleled advantages, it is not only conducive to stimulate students 'interest in reading, but also it can exercise students' reading thinking and ability. But because media literacy education for elementary school students did not follow up timely, students do not know how to choose and use electronic media reading materials, even they are influenced by some bad electronic media extracurricular reading materials that cannot play positive role in extracurricular reading, but impact physical and mental health development of elementary school students negatively. Media literacy education in developed countries is an integrated discipline system now. In aspect of elementary school students'extracurricular reading, foreign media literacy education has certain reference and instructive significance to elementary school students'extracurricular reading, while the research in China also lags behind. In this condition, it is necessary to carry out specialized research for elementary school students in media literacy education and look for effective ways to improve quality and level of elementary school students under reading media literacy education. Writer teaches in rural schools in Lanshan district, Rizhao city, Shandong province and focuses on rural elementary school students' extracurricular reading. Economic development level in rural areas is relatively backward, and teachers and parents do not pay more attention to media literacy education of elementary school students. Rural elementary school students meet many problems in extracurricular reading with various media. So, the empirical study of extracurricular reading under media literacy education is for rural elementary school students.Based on related theories and concepts of media literacy and elementary school students'extracurricular reading, this paper conducts an empirical study on present situation of extracurricular reading of rural elementary school students in Lanshan district, Rizhao city, Shandong province with questionnaire survey and interview. Firstly, this paper studied more current situation and problems of extracurricular reading of rural elementary school students under media literacy education. Secondly, it summarized importance and urgency of media literacy education for elementary school students in the era of new media. And it also studied positive and negative effects of new media reading methods on elementary school students' extracurricular reading to help elementary school students to avoid disadvantages for more effective extracurricular reading. At last, it put forward some effective measures and suggestions to improve the reading level and quality of extracurricular reading in media literacy education.
