Exported from abroad,the cooperative education has been localized gradually in line with the societal development and needs.Being a new model of higher education,the Industry-University-Research cooperative education stresses the theoretical learning as well as practical skills.By connecting universities,enterprises and research institutions,this way of education enables students to learn and work at the same place,which is effective in cultivating talents with practical skills,integrating and utilizing the resources of education,science and economy and meeting the practical needs of socio-economic development.Having reviewed literature in this field,the present study focuses on the student engagement and collects 1952 samples from the case site University H in order to have a deep exploration into the effectiveness of Industry-University-Research cooperative education.This study consists of five parts.The first part investigates the research background,values,focus and methods as well as the existing literature and key concepts.The second part explores the theory of student engagement,shedding light on its development,representative researchers and their arguments,its application at home and abroad,the necessity to apply the theory into this study.and the research on the factors and the effects of student participation in the cooperative education.The third part is on the research design,building a framework,raising hypotheses and testing the reliability and validity.The fourth part presents the results of the study,namely student engagement in Industry-University-Research cooperative education and its effectiveness.The fifth part draws the arguments and proposes concrete solutions.The results of this study indicate that,first,the overall engagement rate,the improvement in skills and the satisfaction with the university and the employers of the undergraduates are relatively high;second,the differences among different disciplines and grades are not salient,but the salience is showed in gender,working duration,motivation and the nature of the employers;third,the student self-report engagement rates of themselves,of the university and of the employers exert impact on different degrees on their improvement in skills and social adaption,and the higher the engagement rates are,the more satisfied the students are.Based on the above results,I propose three solutions.In the first place,Establishing the participation mechanism which is based on students' learning and development to raise their consciousness and skills.Next,a long-term collaborative relationship between the three parties is advisable to motivate their engagement respectively.Last but not least,the three parties need to get involved more deeply into the practice,and build an assurance network from the study to the work to the research.
