Assessment drives the curriculum, instruction and even the whole education. At present, there is a deepening contradiction between the chemical experimental assessment and the constantly-developing cognition, learning and evaluation theories. This study proposes the concept of 'chemical experiment literacy, and develops a tool to get the status quo of the chemical experiment literacy of students.First of all, through summary of studies home and abroad, the core concept of chemical experiment literacy has been defined-the comprehensive performance of individual chemical professional quality and skills of scientific inquiry in chemical exploring practices. Then, the assessment framework of chemical experiment literacy has been established. It contains five dimensions which concluded knowledge, design, operation, verification and explanation and each is set up under three secondary indicators.Based on the theoretical study and assessment framework, the performance of students in real-context has been evaluated. The last part provides feedback reports in conjunction with interviews. This study draws the following conclusions.(a)Scores of the five dimensions of chemical experiment literacy:operation>verification>design>knowledge>explanation.Students have good practical operation and evidence handing abilities while they are poor at explanation which focuses on higher-order thinking. Moreover, knowledge is,surprisingly, not expected to be so well retained.(b)The result indicates six main problems:deficiency of concluding, lack of subject knowledge, imperfect considering of designing,mind-set,improper handling of abnormal phenomena, and insufficient attention to detail. Finally, this study carries on the thought and prospect of experimental teaching and learning methods as well as the proper positioning of performance assessment in the educational practice.
