The left-behind children,as a special group, have come to the fore at the middle of1980 s.With a growing concern towards three issues of agriculture, the countryside and famers, the left-behind children have been receiving extensive attention from all sectors of the society. And through decades of accumulation, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council have paid more and more attention to the left-behind children. What's more, this special group has caused a heated discussion during the “two sessions”(the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference)which has been held on April,2017.With the accumulation of researches of the left-behind children, currently experts and scholars are holding a much more reasonable attitude towards the special group of rural left-behind children. Now it starts to research and discuss the rural left-behind children phenomenon from the aspect of psychological protection. This research takes quantitative and qualitative methods as main research methods.Taking advantage of statistical methods such as descriptive statistical test, multivariate analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis and so forth, and under the premise of controlling demographic variables,Research One analyzes whether the left-behind states of rural children will have obvious predictive effect towards their empathy ability, and meanwhile,it investigates the relationship between empathy and psychosocial adaptation. Then,on the base of Research One,Research Two develops and complies textbooks about empathetic mental health course which is suitable for rural left-behind children.Through carrying this course out among students of the fourth grade and sixth grade in an elementary school, and combining with statistical methods such as covariance analysis,t-test,nonparametric test(rank sum test,signed-rank test)and students' interviews,it aims to verify the validation of the course. The results of this research are as follows:(1)The empathy ability of rural left-behind children are just above the average level. And the level of cognitive empathy is higher than that of affective empathy. There is significant difference among gender, grades and the degree of parent-child communication in the empathy ability of rural left-behind children.(2)The left-behind states of rural children do not have significantly predictive effect towards their empathy ability.(3)The empathy ability of rural left-behind children are partly related to the psychosocial adaptation. And the empathy can predict some parts of psychosocial adaptation.(4)The empathetic mental health course can obviously improve the empathy ability and interpersonal competence of students in the fourth grade of the rural elementary school, and reduce depression distinctly. The empathetic mental health course is less influential towards students in the sixth grade of the rural elementary school: it only improves their interpersonal competence and reduces depression.
