The integral design of instructional units is currently a major area of research and experiment in the field of ELT in primary schools in China.It emphasizes the unity and integrity of instructional design for a whole unit and reflects the current ideas and practice curriculum reform in primary ELT.Therefore,the writer of this dissertation made an attempt to explore the possibilities of improving primary English teaching by means of integral task design for the instructional unit.This is meant to look at task design as an integral part of the whole process of teaching based on the unit.The research is intended to be carried out in view of the task-based approach for the teaching of primary Oxford English textbooks.The completion of this paper is supported and made possible by relevant literature review,investigations and action research.This paper analyzes the historical evolution and the present situation of the research on the integral task design of the unit,and give an account of the theoretical basis of this paper.Questionnaires are designed and surveys carried out for data analysis of the current primary school English teachers’ cognition and practice of the integral task design of the unit.The major issue for study is how to improve the effectiveness of primary school English classroom teaching by means of the integral task design of the unit.Examples are listed and specified to illustrate the framework of the integral task design of the unit and its specific implementation strategies.Through data analysis related to the experiments,a conclusion is drawn to state that the integral task design of the unit is helpful for arousing students’ interest in learning and improving the efficiency of classroom teaching of English.At the same time,main problems encountered in the implementation of integral task design approach are pointed out and strategies to deal with such problems are suggested.As a result,further research proposal is made for in-depth study in areas regarding the above mentioned problems and suggestions.This is supposed to come up with new ideas and inspiration that may benefit teachers of English in their efforts to improve ELT in the primary classroom.
