For top-level soccer competition, the physical fitness of atheletes is the basis of the exertion of soccer techniques and tactics. The level of Chinese soccer super league is still inferior to world top-level leagues, and the pace of the games is much slower compared with world top-level games. One of the important reasons lead to this is the physical fitness of atheletes.Comepared to western soccer players, most of the Chinese soccer players are at a disadvantage when refered to the level of soccer special physical fitness. Thus, the improvement of soccer physical fitness is critical for the progress of Chinese soccer.High-intensity interval training,as a time-saved and simple program for physical ability training,is widely acknowledged in improving physical fitness of cycling, tracking and triathlon athletes. However, the effects of high-intensity interval training on athletes of non-periodic sports are not recognized, and there is no consistent conclusion when referred to its effects on the physical fitness of soccer athletes. This study aims to explore the effects of high-intensity interval training on the physical fitness of soccer athletes through exerting high-intensity interval training program on soccer athletes and observing the variation of physical fitness before and after the intervention.Twenty male soccer players form a university are included as participants and assigned randomly into two groups. The experimental group accepted a 10 weeks high-intensity interval training program, and players needed to have 2 days for this training per week. For each training class, they finished 2 sessions of sprints, and each session includes 12 times of sprints, and each sprint lasts for 15 seconds. The interval time is 15 seconds between two sprints and 10 minutes between 2 sessions. For the control group, the participates finished a 70% max heart rate intensity running lasting for 40 minutes for each training class. The physical fitness related indexes were tested before and after the 10 weeks' intervention. After intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvement(P < 0.05)in 12 min running,40 m sprinting,Yo Yo test, vertical jump and Illinois test compared to that before intervention;while the control showed significant improvement only in 12 min running and Yo Yo test(P <0.05).According to the results of this study,it can be concluded that:(1)High-intensity interval training is beneficial for soccer players to improve their aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity,lower-limb power and flexibility.(2)High-intensity interval training has more advantages compared to the traditional medium-intensity and long time aerobic training.(3)High-intensity interval training has potential significant importance for the further improvement of soccer players' physical fitness in-season as a time-saved and efficient training program.
