As a second language,chart has an indispensable role in biology teaching.Chart accounts a large proportion in all kinds of biological textbooks,test paper or college entrance examinations.Information ability is the core component of information literacy,including the ability to extract effective information,the ability to process relevant information,the ability to use useful information and the ability to convert multiple forms of information.Biological chart information ability is part of the most important abilities for high school students.An empirical study on senior high school students' biological chart information ability was conducive to enhancing students' information ability,reaching the requirements of the new curriculum standard and the test syllabus,achieving the purpose of quality education,and providing the possibility for the realization of lifelong learning.This research covered the questionnaire survey method and the interview method.The purpose of the study was to understand the present situation of high school biological chart teaching,the present situation of biological chart information ability of high school students,the main difficulties encountered by students in learning graph knowledge and solving graph problems of six middle schools in central Sichuan province.The results were as follows:(1)Students satisfied with the status of biological chart teaching.62.8% of them reflected that their teachers often used the chart during the teaching;95.3% of the students expressed satisfaction or basically content with the chart teaching process;75.0% of them agreed that teachers should use more charts especially in explain difficult problems.(2)Students' chart information ability should be improved.The results of students' self-evaluation in chart information capability showed that the ability achieved upper-middle level.Taking the exam of photosynthesis and respiration to test the information ability of students,the results showed that the students' average score was8.54(total score was 16),the information ability of male students was significantly stronger than that of female students(p < 0.01),and the information ability of senior three students was significantly stronger than that of the senior one students(p < 0.01),and the information ability of the key middle schools' students was significantly stronger than that of the common students(p < 0.01).Students' abilities to deal with different types of chart were different.The ability to deal with the table was thestrongest,followed by the processing curve and the histogram while the ability to handle the text and device was the weakest.(3)Most students knew the correct steps,but the score was not ideal due to the lack of basic knowledge,can't read the main chart information and the less opportunity to practice.Finally,this paper puts forward the strategies of enhancing the chart information ability of students,from the aspects of how to explain the method of reading drawings,guide the process of mapping,build mind maps and strengthen chart training,then puts forward a teaching case,which aims to provide reference for the teaching of first-line teachers.
