Reading is the most basic way to get access to information,as well as the primary way of information input.Thus,reading teaching plays an important role in senior high school.However,the author found that there had been several problems in English reading teaching in this senior high school: teachers focus more on vocabularies and grammars than the training of reading strategies.And without reading strategies,students have low efficiency of reading,which have caused poor effectiveness in English reading teaching.In the late 1990 s,the international renowned English language educator Harmer,proposed the ESA teaching model in his work How to Teach English.The words E,S and A are the abbreviation of the sequence of Engage,Study and Activate respectively.Meanwhile,Hammer introduced the advantages of ESA teaching model.There are three different types that are composed of three basic elements,they are: Straight Arrow sequence,Boomerang sequence and Patchwork sequence.That is,teachers can design teaching models flexibly according to the characters of students and the teaching materials.The effective teaching models which are made up of sequences of Engage,Study,Activate can be applied to achieve the teaching effectiveness.To solve the problems that the author found in the actual English teaching,the ESA teaching model was applied to the English reading teaching.109 students from Class 19 and Class 20 of Senior Two in Rushan No.1 Middle School were chosen as the experiment subjects.The two questions of the research are: 1)Whether ESA teaching model can enhance the interest and passion of students' in English reading.2)Whether ESA teaching model can help students master strategies of reading better and also improve the reading achievement of the students'.During the experiment,the author applied the ESA teaching model to the experimental class.And the author applied traditional teaching model to the controlled class,such as grammar translation teaching approach and PWP teaching model.After analyzing and summarizing the experiment data with SPSS 19.0,as well asrethinking and generalization,the author completed this thesis.The experimental data showed that the students from the experimental class made an obvious progress in English reading,regardless of the passion or achievement.Performance in controlled class has also been improved,while it was of no significance.So,the experimental results demonstrated that the ESA teaching model is practical in improving the current situation of English teaching in senior high school.
