In order to make the target language consistent with the source language,in many cases, the source language needs to add some words or phrases to make the target language smooth and natural. This paper explores theaddition shifts in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.Through the comparative analysis of the source language and target language,it is found that the “shifts” type is mainly the addition shifts. In the interpretation process, the translator will follow the principle of meaning consistency and information integrity between the target language and the source language. However,in the process of interpreting, there will be some problems, such as slip of speech and hesitation. In order to avoid major mistakes,in the consecutive interpretation, the translator will reorganize the discourse to make corrections to the previous translation to conform to the logic and grammar. When the translator realizes that the audience cannot understand the target language, the translator will clarify the target language to meet the needs of the audience. When the source language has cultural specific words, the translator will do some supplementary explanation.Translators often use polymerism method and fission method to make the logical relationshipclear,to make the information contentspecific, and to make the discourse meaningdominant. This will optimize the expression of the target language. The audience can also clearly receive and understand the source language information and the meaning of the spokesman. The interpreter also achievessmooth and faithful translation. This paperprovidessome inspiration fortranslators in future translation practice.
