A Study On The Translation Of Words In Zhu Ziyu

"Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi",a transcript of lectures given by Zhu Xi and his disciples,is not only a manifestion of his Neo-Confucianism Thought,the precious material for the study of social,economic and cultural life in Song Dynasty,but also the "living" ancient vernacular texts of spoken document of that time.In recent years,indepth studies have been done on "Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi" and ancient vernaculars.Therefore,the translation of materials in "Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi" is conducive not only to the spread and popularization of Zhu Xi's thought,but also to the further exploration of the ancient vernacular vocabulary.This study,based on the lexical analysis of "Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi",discusses its relationship with the modern Chinese vocabulary.Its existing translation is also analyzed and commented according to the previous studies of "Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi".The introduction,first of all,introduces the value of the book "Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi",and also the value and significance of its translation.At the same time,the studies on its words and phrases and on translations are illustrated,which leads to the organization of this study.The first chapter explores the problems existed in and the necessity of the modern translation of ancient classics.In this part,the history of modern translation of ancient classics is introduced,its relationship with Zhu Xi,and the part that synonyms play in words translation.The second chapter analyzes one of the existing translation versions,"Selection from Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi".Focused discussions on the logic of the selection,the use of words and annotation,and on the universality of selecting principles of each selection are done,and the errors in the use of words are summed up.The third chapter sums up many problems existed in the translation of vocabulary and discusses the methods of translation from the deficiency of "Selection from Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi".Then two problems are discussed: morpheme change principle in the translation of ancient vernacular;the part that disyllablic process plays in translation from ancient vernacular vocabulary to modern Chinese.The fourth chapter analyzes the translation of the colloquial words in “Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi” and the existing versions of the translation.Translations are analyzed from the two aspects: both words with different meanings,and words with same meaning in ancient and modern times.The application of Yan Fu's "faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance " and Eugene A.Nida's "equivalent theory" in translation is deeply explored.
