Project-based learning is a widely used learning mode in European countries and the United States. Its goal and process experience are in accordance with what the Chinese curriculum reform proposes: self-guidance, cooperation and exploration.Echoing with the need of development of curriculum reform, this research of literacy teaching in primary grades within the framework of project-based learning was then carried out, in order to improve the disadvantages in the current literacy teaching: disappointing effect and students' passive literacy learning. This research started from the definition of the core concepts including “literacy teaching” and “project-based learning”, etc., analyzing the academic foundation of project-based learning. It also combined classroom observation and analysis of teaching videos, proposing that there should be three stages in the mode of literacy teaching targeting students of primary grades: the start-up stage, the research stage and the summing-up stage of the project.Referring to the functions and operational mode of project-based learning when utilized in literacy teaching in primary grades, this research has proposed certain teaching techniques: cleverly use the textbook and overcome the difficult points so that students can carry out standard pronunciations; compare pictures and characters and intensify key points so as to make them smartly remember the shape of characters; give direct presentation as well as make use of words and sentences so that students can learn the meaning of the characters. These teaching techniques also include: use mind map to implement literacy learning which is actually carrying out association and joint drawing of the students; use association to actualize literacy learning which refers to summarizing the similarities and differences among characters and combining the learning and utilization of them; carry out literacy learning from context which means leading students to read related articles of the textbook to enrich their reading; bring about self-guided literacy learning, which is letting students utilize the learning methods studied in school to learn about characters they come across in life. This research selected “Colorful Life and Happy Reading” as an example, illustrating detailed introduction and discussion about how to carry out literacy teaching in primary grades within the framework of project-based learning. The research showed that compared with traditional method, the project-based literacy teaching targeted at primary grades have several obvious advantages. First, the national curriculum is reconstructed by project-based learning so that the resources of literacy learning can be enriched. Second, literacy learning is replaced by literacy exploration, which increases students' interest. Third, traditional classroom transforms into life-based classroom so that students can acquire literacy leaning method. Moreover, students are self-guided, cooperate and explorative, cultivating their multiple intelligences. Last but not least, single evaluation is turned into a multiple evaluation system which deepens the evaluation of literacy teaching. This research also reflected the problems in the practice, putting forward the countermeasures and suggestions for further research.
