Research On The History Of The Change Of The Certificate-based Enrollment Examination System In British Universities

Britain has a long history and tradition of the examination as well as China. Indeed, when China was in the implementation of the imperial examination, Britain was under Monarch grant system. In 1905, the Chinese imperial examination system faded out from the stage of history after 1300 years'implementation. At the same time, the British entrance examination system has evolved several times in the long history of development, becoming a model for other countries'civil service examination system and other selection tests. Until today, the unique and influential certificate enrollment examination system of British universities and colleges is still the model of many countries and regions'college entrance examination system in the word. This thesis is committed to in-depth study of the developmental process of forming of the certificate enrollment examination system of the universities and colleges in the UK and analyzes its characteristics, in order to provide some reflection and reference for our ongoing reform of college entrance examination.This thesis focuses on the certificate examination and the university admission to research on the "college entrance examination system" in the UK. First of all, the paper analyzes the germination, development and reform of the college entrance examination system in the UK from a macro perspective, on this basis, select the representative of a particular period of development, such as the two classical Universities and the University of London, from the microscopic point of view to study its impact on the process of the establishment of the examination system. Secondly, the thesis excavates the history of British college entrance examination system in the time axis for clues, and discusses its evolution in different historical periods as time goes step by step. Finally, to sort out the reform of the existing certificate enrollment examination system of British universities and colleges and to summarize the characteristics of the system.This thesis consists of 4 parts. The introduction part covers the origin and the significance of the study, the previous researches and results, research methods. And research-related issues are clearly defined. The first chapter is a historical review of the early enrollment system of British universities. Back to the initial starting point to better understand the history of British college entrance examination system. The second chapter is the key of this paper, to research the formation of the current certificate enrollment examination system of the British universities and colleges, and in-depth analysis of the historical reasons which contributed to every change.The third chapter is the analysis of the reform of the present certificate enrollment examination system of British universities and colleges as well as the characteristics of certificate enrollment examination system.
