Historical land use/cover change is the pioneer and foundation of modern land use/cover,Modern land use/cover is the continuation and development of land use change in historical period. The study of LUCC in the historical period will help to understand the essence of human relations and the harmonious development of human and environment in the process of history. It is of great significance for human current and future production activities and reasonable land use.In this study,we estimated the provincial cropland area and population of Jiangxi province in 1393-1910.Based on the pattern of modern arable land distribution, the relationship among altitude, gradient, distance from the nearest river, population density and cropland distribution were quantified to develop the spatially explicit reconstruction model of historical cropland at a resolution of 1 km×1 km.Thus, the cropland area data were brought into the historical cropland grid reconstruction model, and the spatial distribution pattern of cultivated land of 1393,1491,1578,1661,1782 and 1910 was obtained. Then, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of the cropland in Ming and Qing Dynasties by the cumulative change rate and the spatial-temporal variation index(STVI).The results showed that:(1)During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the number of cropland in Jiangxi Province was relatively stable, and the cultivated land area decreased slightly from 1393 to 1578,and gradually decreased from 1661 to 1782,and the area of cultivated land decreased significantly from 1782 to 1910,The area of cropland was significantly affected by the population.(2)From the spatial distribution point of view, the cropland was mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Ganjiang River valley, and the cropland area showed a gradual decrease of the ring to the outside, also, this region's STVI value was higher, which indicated that the distribution of cultivated land in the region is more stable.(3)By brought the cropland data of 1980 into the reconstruction model, the results were significantly positively correlated with the satellite-observed data, the correlation coefficient was 0.82,which indicated that the model could reconstructed the spatial distribution of cropland in the historical period, the method in this study was reasonable.Based on the above research, this study selected the historical data which was more abundant in 1820 for the study time section,a variety of methods has been used to reconstruct the land use spatial pattern of Jiangxi province in 1820 with a spatial grid of 1km×1km,such as administrative legacy proximity analysis, suitable evaluation, etc.Furthermore,a comparative analysis has been made between the reconstruction results and the modern land use data of Jiangxi province in 1980.Results showed that:(1)The regression results passed the significance test, which indicated that the reconstruction result was reasonable.(2)The area of cropland, urban land, rural residential land, water body and other land of Jiangxi Province in 1820 was 29228 km2,105 km2,1648 km2,3730 km2,134227 km2 respectively. From the view of land use spatial distribution, the land use in different regions was affected by topography, population and river, and the difference between each other was obvious.Cropland was mainly distributed in the Poyang lake plain, north of Ji'an,Jianchang prefecture.Compared with cropland, the urban land and rural residential land was more fragmented, mainly distributed in the river bank and the confluence of river.(3)From 1820 to 1980,the land use spatial distribution of Jiangxi province had not changed drastic,But influenced by the immigration, the population increased in Jiangxi province made a great contribution to quantity growth of the urban land, rural residential land and cropland, the growth number of the urban land, rural residential land and cropland was 364 km2,462 km2,16276 km2 respectively.
