Electricity is the most widely used form of energy in the world today,it's produced by conversion of primary sources of energy like natural gas and coal.Humans have over time exploited it such that it has become of importance and part of modern lifestyle,as it fuels our existence and makes the world go around. The world would be different if humans had not found a way to harness and exploit its potential, everything we have today from cell phones and televisions to traffic lights and tablets wouldn't exist. It has become close to impossible for man to survive without electricity.Sub-Sahara Africa experiences more power outage, than any other region in the world. The outages come with varying negative impacts.Kenya like any other subSahara country is experiencing the power outages which have become an issue of concern especially in the capital city Nairobi. This thesis presents a project planning and scheduling for energy generation to reduce power outages in Nairobi county,by generating energy from waste in the Dandora landfills Nairobi. It will be an additional source of renewable energy, for Nairobi and a technique to minimizing the power outages.A project of this magnitude is done in 2 parts.Part 1 would involve the design of the manufacturing plant that will generate energy from waste. This design would consider the mass flow rate of the waste, the landfill size and equipment's required. It also requires detailed research measurements and instrumentation from various experts in the field of chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil and industrial engineers. The chemical, mechanical and electrical engineers will first do a model simulation to determine how much waste is needed to produce 160 Megawatts of electricity daily, then determine the equipment's needed for the process. The civil engineers will then consider the infrastructure, assisting with the layout of the power plant.Part 2 of the project employs the experience and expertise of the industrial engineers and the project managers. This is where project planning and scheduling is done to determine scope or work to be done, the schedule or time frame and cost so as to determine the projects feasibility. This thesis is based on part 2 which applied project management tools,to plan and schedule the project implementation by employing the methods of Work Breakdown Structure(WBS)to analyze the positive tasks that were allocated and the responsibility Matrix for the management of the landfill project,Gantt chart for the time schedule and the network diagram, which identified the projects critical path.Research questionnaires for data collection were used and data from the KPLC website. The results of this thesis will be to save cost by make use of available resources, save time wasted when theirs power outage and give an additional alternative source of renewable energy to the national energy grid.
