Planning,Architecture Design And POE Research On The Residential College Of SUSTech

Since 2005,colleges and universities in mainland China have been exploring the education concept of “residential college” under the “new era” background.For those newly-established residential colleges,the campus architecture suitable for such a college system is also on the agenda-thus,campus design has become a vital subject.Located in Shenzhen(the “Capital of Innovation”),Southern University of Science and Technology has clearly employed the “residential college” as its educational format at the very beginning of its establishment.On this basis,building designing and campus planning have taken “residential college” as the core,which are still rare in China.Since the first batch of college buildings were officially put into use in 2013,positive comments and criticism have been mixed.After 5 years of using,it is quite necessary to estimate their effectiveness and analyze their experience and lessons.The author had the opportunity to witness and participate in this process,and has obtained a lot of first-hand resources to carry out this research.The performance of residential college buildings does not depend solely on the designer.Generally speaking,for the construction projects of Chinese universities,campus managers,campus designers and campus users together decide on the final effectiveness through continuous game and coordination in the whole life cycle of the buildings.This game becomes particularly complex in the process of the application of the new education system.This research paper takes method of POE and sociology as the analysis tools,combines the research of the construction system of Chinese universities and the exploration of the academy system,studies the development of planning and building design of the “residential college” in Southern University ofScience and Technology,and focuses on the efficiency of space use in Lakeside Residential College.Through the analysis and summary of existing problems,this paper reveals the unique architectural and cultural attributes of residential college buildings,and offers some useful information to promote the architectural design about residential college from the multiple perspectives of administrators,designers,educators and students.
