The report is based on the translation of The Gold Standard as an Alternative Monetary Regime, the sixth chapter of the academic monograph Commodity Markets and the Global Economy. The author Blake Clayton,a veteran Wall Street analyst and adjunct fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, employs elaborate words, vivid idioms, complicated sentences and diverse terms to build the text, giving the text both professionalism and literariness. Thus the translation of this book will be serving as a typical example and reference for that of economic texts.Economic text,a type of informative text, features information transmission as the ultimate goal. This differs from the goals of others types of texts and thus different translation strategies and methods should be used accordingly. This report first analyzes the characteristics of the translation material;then through analyzing different translation examples,it attempts to explore the proper translation strategies and correspondent translation methods. For example, free translation and adding or omitting words can be used when translating rhetoric and parenthesis sentences;changing word properties, adding subjects and splitting and sentences restructuring when translating abstract nouns and long sentences. When it comes to translating terms and idioms, different methods should be applied;the former may better be paraphrased but the latter should be strictly translated according to its literal meaning and form.
