Strategies For Translating Long Sentences From English To Chinese

Conference Interpreting:A Trainer's Guide,an academic work on interpretation pedagogy published in 2016,emphasizes the principles of curriculum design and teaching methods;it targets curriculum designers,instructors and interpreters.The combination of in-depth theoretical exploration,practical guidance and exercises makes the book unique.Chapter ten of the book covers a wide range of topics,including the principled requirements for interpreters,the specific strategies for optimizing interpretation,and the practical suggestions for teachers or trainers to design the interpretation curriculum.This report focuses on long sentences in the tenth chapter of the book and analyzes the strategies for their translation.Long sentences are very common in English for the features of many modifiers,coordinative constituents and layered structures,while Chinese is featured by short sentences,which make the translation of English long sentences difficult in Conference Interpreting:A Trainer's Guide.Built upon previous researches on the translation of English long sentences,this report analyzes the translation of English long sentences in academic works with six strategies:subordination,amplification,omission,conversion,inversion,and division.This study may be helpful for readers to have a more in-depth understanding of English-Chinese long sentence translation;in addition,it could be useful as well if researchers want to analyze conference interpreting theories.
