Japan is a country with strong cultural soft power in the cultural circle of Chinese characters.Chinese characters have undergone a process of introductions, evolutions, reforms, and innovations in Japan, and today have become an integral part of Japanese. At the end of the 19th century, under the impact of Western culture, both Japan and China produced thoughts on suspicion of Chinese characters and the abolition or restriction of Chinese characters.Although these ideas failed to become a reality, the two countries conducted a large number of standardization work of Chinese characters in the 20th century.Japanese's standardization work of Chinese characters started early than Chinese's.They have made many types of specifications, which has implications for China. This article is based on a series of Chinese character tables released after the Meiji Restoration in Japan. It systematically studies Japanese character standardization work during this period, categorizes and studies different systems of Chinese character forms, sorts out its background and history, analyzes its advantages and disadvantages. The clear framework of the Chinese character specification provides a reference for future research. At the same time, the article compares the similarities and differences between the Chinese and Japanese standardization work of Chinese characters and draws lessons from the Japanese Kanji standardization work to provide reference for the future Chinese character standardization work. The main content of this paper includes four chapters:The first chapter is introduction. This chapter briefly introduces the introduction, evolution and innovation of Chinese characters in Japan, the Japanese Kanji standard and the researches about them, and the significance and innovation of the research on Japanese Kanji norms. The second chapter is about the Japanese Kanji standards since the Meiji period. This chapter uses a qualitative method to systematically describe the Japanese Kanji standards since the Meiji Restoration.Although Japanese Kanji standards released before the end of World War ? was not widely implemented in society,it had an impact on the formulation of the standards after the war. There are mainly three typesof Japanese post-war Kanji norms:the social universal Japanese Kanji specification, the Japanese Kanji used in personal name and KANJI sets for information interchange.Among them, the first category has two Japanese Kanji specification systems:"Chinese characters designated for daily use curently" and " Japanese Kanji for common use ",which have a relationship of inheritance and development. In this part of the paper, the background and development trajectory of the development of various types of word lists are sorted out, with emphasis on their structure, style, general characteristics, and their impact on society. This section is also the basis for the subsequent research on the role of Japanese Kanji norms. The third part is about the similarities and differences of the Chinese character standards in China and Japan. In this chapter,we use the induction method to briefly introduce the work of Chinese character specification in China after the founding of the People's Republic of China and then compare the similarities and differences of Chinese character standards in the two countries.First,to compare specifications of Chinese characters related to the shape of characters.Second,to compare the specifications of Chinese characters related to the pronunciation of words.Third,to compare the specifications based on the use frequency of Chinese characters. The fourth chapter is about the enlightenment of the Japanese Kanji standardization work to China. This chapter is to summarize the enlightenment from the Japanese Kanji specification work on various aspect. It focused on the need for China to formulate the use of personal names and the experience of Japan in this area to inspire China. Finally,we will sum up the lessons learned from the work of the Japanese Kanji standard and provide lessons for similar work in China.
