The report chooses the first chapter of the novel Bliss, the magnum opus of an Australian writer,Peter Carey,as the source text.In translating the Bliss from English to Chinese, the long English sentences the most difficult point.Hence this report will elaborate on the translation of long sentences from English to Chinese. Many previous studies have discussed the translation of long sentences from English to Chinese from a general aspect regardless of the text type. There are also some papers which have made attempts to combine the translation of long English sentences with the literary text, but actually on the whole some of them are not really aimed at the literary text and as a matter of fact still follow the general strategies put forward by previous studies.Long sentences are special codes of Bliss, making the book quite distinctive. The form of long sentences that can be seen everywhere in Bliss shows their values in enriching the content and style of the book, but if a translator blindly panders to the target language regardless of the syntactic structure of those long sentences,he or she would lose the basic style of the literary work.Since different sentence patterns have different functions, the best translation is to conserve both the original form and the "spirit",the second-best is to adjust the form so as to conserve the spirit and the undesirable one is to blindly conserve the original form regardless the spirit.Hereby, the translator specifically chooses three strategies in translating long sentences from English to Chinese in the literary work,Bliss:translating in original sequence, disjoining and combining more than one strategy. The first is adopted to make cohesion in the translation,to give readers the feeling of actually being there and to lead readers into characters' inner word bit by bit;sometimes the translator also need to use the second strategy so as to maintain the quick or lively rhythm,or to represent the strong contrast in the source text achieved only by connective devices;when a single method sometimes is not enough, the translator should adopt the third technique.
