Strategies For Translating Long Sentences From English Into Chinese In Literary Works From The Perspective Of Stylistics

It is known that the translation of long sentences from English into Chinese can be difficult for translators to deal with.Researches have been done by many scholars on the strategies aimed at dealing with this issue.Based on the genre of the materials for translation,the researches can be conducted from the perspectives of translation of' literary works and translation of non-literary works.This thesis is aimed at discussing the strategies for translating English long sentences in terms of literary works.based on the translation of a novel named Cooking for Picasso.Most of the scholars in previous studies did not discuss the translation of the two types of texts above separately,but only from the general aspect.Although some scholars who have discussed the translation of long sentences in literary works from English into Chinese have brought up a few strategies,these strategies are still not specific and detailed enough.In order to fill the research gap,this thesis aims to summarize and come up with strategies for translating long sentences in literary works from English into Chinese based on the characteristics of literature,while combining the results of previous studies.According to relevant works,the main characteristic of literary works is in its literariness.Therefore,the prominent issue in terms of the translation of literary works is to convey the literariness of the original work,to deal with the "superficial expressive form of language"(Leech&Short,2007)so as to restore the literariness.While the previous studies have focused on the "superficial expressive form of language",that is to say.the differences between English and Chinese syntactic structures,they have ignored the most essential parts of literary translation.This thesis aims to study and discuss the literary translation from the perspective of stylistics,linking the "superficial expressive form of language" with its profound literary meaning,and rethinking the strategies for translating long sentences from English into Chinese,including those proposed in the previous studies.The new strategies can be classified into three groups respectively,that is.sequencing/inversion.splitting/reservation of long sentences as well as treating special syntax structure.
