Conjunction Processing Strategies In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting

In recent years,simultaneous interpreting has become the preference for many international conferences on account of its high efficiency and real time communication.In the light of Halliday and Hasan's cohesive theory,this thesis focuses on conjunction processing stategies in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.By reviewing previous studies on conjunctions with respect to simultaneous interpreting,a consensus can be reached that although the number of relevant studies is increasing,nevertheless very few studies analyze the cohesion and coherence pattern of the interpreted discourse and even fewer is supported by empirical data.This thesis,therefore,is based on a comparative study whereby two professional and three student interpreters are required to give simultaneous interpreting to the test material and have an interview after the experiment so as to testify the hypothesis that there is a positive correlation between the interpreters' conjunction treatment capacity and their interpreting performance.Based on the evaluation model put forward by scholars including Yang Chengshu and combined with the experiment,the subjects' performances are quantitatively assessed from aspects of fidelity,logic and fluency.Meanwhile,subjects' records are collected and transferred into transcripts with special marks so as to summarize conjunction treatment strategies adopted by subjects and analyze the similarities as well as differences.It is concluded that the hypothesis is correct.It is also summarized that,a)both professional interpreters and student interpreters are conscious of treating conjunctions with certain strategies while the former enjoys better performance in dealing with implicit cohesive devices and logical relations.b)major reasons for differences between the two groups in treating conjunctions include language proficiency,simultaneous interpreting skills and linguistic habits.c)common conjunction processing strategies in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting are omitting,preserving,adding and alternating.
