China Dolls, from which chapter one, chapter three, chapter eight in part two are taken as the source text,is a novel written by Lisa See,a Chinese-American woman writer. The author mainly depicts three Asian-American girls life experiences. After Pearl Harbor broke out, three girls' contradictions intensified gradually in such a tense international relation.Based on the framework of Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory, this translation report puts emphasis on analyzing Chinese version of China Dolls.Semantic translation requires being faithful to the original author and context, achieving exactly same meaning and context of the original text as much as possible if structure of the target language permits, and the communicative translation requires that the effect should be as close to the original text as possible.During the process of translation, the author tries to be faithful to the original text to ensure the accuracy of the translation, and also to be succinct, showing a clear and coherent Chinese version. This translation report is divided into four parts. The first part is the description of the translation task, which mainly introduces the source of the task, the text description and the significance of the translation. The second part is the translation process, including the pre-translation preparation and the modified Chinese version.Under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation theory, the third part lays stress on the analysis for translation by means of several translation methods and strategies, such as amplification, conversion, division,to enable the target language readers to understand the original text effectively. The fourth part is the summary of translation, including gains and losses.Through this translation report, the translator hopes that some enlightenment and reflections can be achieved by target readers.
