The Study On Translation Of Government Website News From The Perspective Of Si's TQA Model

With the development of economy and improvement of comprehensive strength,China hopes its voices can be more heard in the international community.Therefore,spreading the Chinese stories and images to the world has become a concerned issue as well as a heated research topic for many English scholars in recent years.The mainstream medium in China play important roles in publicity.Thus,the news translation should be appropriate enough.The emphasis and difficulties lying in the translation of the news are:making functional equivalence,eliminating culture differences,and improving acceptability for foreign readers.The previous journalism translation research,on one hand,lacks theoretical innovation and flooded with empiricism;on the other hand,most of them focuses on translation methods,strategies or principles,but lacks consideration on the acceptability of the translation.Based on the previous research findings,the thesis tries to amend the deficiencies of previous studies---Si's TQA model is adopted as the theoretical framework and the news of Chinese Government Website and its corresponding translation is chosen as research object for translation quality evaluation.Firstly,twenty pieces of news from the Chinese Government Website and its translations are listed to evaluate the fidelity,i.e.to analyze the clauses in light of three register variables:field,tenor and mode through corresponding grammatical system:transitivity,mood and theme systems,to describe its ideational meanings and interpersonal meanings.There are three kinds of adaptations---addition,deletion and rewriting---virtually influence the ideational meanings,meanwhile,the emotional connection is weakened.After examining each case,it is found that these deviations in ideational meanings and interpersonal meanings are to improve the fully understanding of the news for foreign readers.From the perspectives of functional equivalence,the target texts are faithful to the source texts.Secondly,comparison of schematic structure(GSP model)and discursive features between twenty news from the Canadian government website and the target texts is made to evaluate the expressiveness of the target texts.The target texts bear similar schematic structure to Canadian government news,but for discursive features,Chinese news are more imperative with words "should" and "must".Finally,the results of the former two steps are integrated and general assessment as well as suggestions are given.The significance of the thesis lies in the following two aspects.The first is to provide suggestions for the Chinese Government Website news translation based on the studies on fidelity of the translation as well as the acceptability of foreign readers.The second is to prove the appropriateness and efficaciousness of applying Si's TQA model to government website news translation,providing new perspectives and approaches for the further studies on news translation.
