Long Sentences Translation In Ecological Sci-tech Text: A Report On The English To Chinese Translation On The Journal Of Integrative Environmental Sciences

The Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences is an anthology of the 49 latest progress reports on studying the main global greenhouse gases put forth at the International Conference on Global Climate Change in 2010 and 2014.The progress reports mainly illustrate the source and sink of CO2,CH4,and N2O emitted from farmland,wetland,grassland and forests from the global vision,involving the radiation budget and energy balance of their spatial and temporal distribution and change in the earth-atmosphere system.The journal also includes studies on the main greenhouse gases' concentration change,the constitution,properties,and intensity as well as introduced technology.An additional noteworthy point is that the Chinese translation of the journal is one of the achievements of the national special program of international scientific and technological cooperation sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology.The author is a member of the translators in this translation practice.The author has completed a translation of over 95,000 words and arranged it as the material for this report.The source text is defined as ecological sci-tech text for its contents and features as well as the criterion of text type.The author has focused on analyzing the long sentences and found four predominant characteristics of long sentences in ecological sci-tech text:passive voice,extensive use of terminologies,complicated modifiers and complex structure.Further to this,the author tries to explore the translation skills for long sentences in the perspective of syntactical differences between English and Chinese,such as word order adjustment,sentences splitting up,flexible conversion and punctuation insertion.Based on theoretical analysis,the author uses examples and comparisons in illustrating relevant translation skills.The author has accumulated translation experience and skills in ecological science and technology through this practice,improved learning ability,and realized the importance of teamwork spirit.However,given the lack of academic background knowledge,the understanding of terms,formulas,figures and tables may be not perfect.Additionally,there are some further obstacles that need to be dealt with,which means that the quality of the translation still needs to be improved.The author hopes that this report could enrich the studies on long sentences translation of ecological sci-tech text.
