Report On Translation Of Walking In The Shade (Chapter One)

This report is about the author’s translation of Chapter One of Walking in the Shade written by Doris Lessing,the 2007 winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.The work Walking in the Shade is the second of Lessing’s autobiography series.It recorded the process of Lessing’s writing of the Golden Notebook and her life experience during the period from 1949 to 1962,and the changes of thoughts in the British social and political aspects in the 1950s.Lessing is regarded as the greatest female writer since Virginia Woolf and she was titled "the originator of women’s fiction" and "the grandmother of British literary".Besides,she has won many times the nomination for the Nobel Prize for literature and a number of other world-class literary awards.As the source text is characterized as the genre of autobiography,this report mainly adopts the translation principle of domestication to tell the story more vividly and make the target readers form the same reading experience as that of source text.To realize this,such strategies and methods as using short sentences,reversion and conversion of voice are employed in translating to highlight the Chinese features.Meanwhile,through some reasonable transformation and embedding of some TL markers,like using sub-rhythmical sentences,Chinese idioms and rhetoric devices with distinct Chinese features,the TT’s literariness is improved which enables to attract the Chinese readers,bring them into the context,and experience the original story to the maximum degree.Accordingly,the report first introduces the background and significance of the study.Then the author gives a general description of the preparation process which is followed by the introduction of domestication theory and its guidance to the translation.The author puts emphasis on the problems in the process of translating and then concludes the corresponding translation strategies for tackling the translation difficulties by citing some typical examples.By combining some translation theories and strategies with the appropriate creative translation,the writer attempts to display and manifest the ST’s authentic elegance.
