This is a practical report on the E-C translation of an academic paper.The source text of the translation project is from Life Cycle Assessment of Indian Silk published in the international academic journal Journal of Cleaner Production.This paper deals with the life cycle assessment and sustainability of silk material,aiming at quantifying the impact of raw silk production on the environment.In nature,the source text is an academic paper,and also a text containing textile information.So it is characterized with being both academic and specialized.Therefore,it can be analysed from the above two aspects.This report sumarrizes the practice of the translation project under the guidance of the functionalist view of translation,which emphasizes the type of the source text and the corresponding translation principles adopted.Firstly the author analyzes the source text and the target text from the cross-sentence level and the inner-sentence level,and then discusses how to convey to the maximum extent the message of the signal words,the complex sentences and the terms in the source text,thus to obtain the optimum effect of the source text.This report is divided into five parts.The first part is the introduction,including the source,the structure and the significance of the project.In the second part,the research background and methodology are introduced.Also this part analyzes the characteristics of academic English and the grounds on which the translation principles adopted in the project.In part three,pre-translation preparation is made,including the source language analysis,the schedule of the project,the quality control,and the related technical support.Part four deals with the analysis of the translation process.From the cross-sentence level,it discusses the processing of the signal words of logical relations and the treatment of complex sentences in terms of structural relations,and discusses the problems of the verification and unification of terms.Part five is the conclusion of this report.It is mainly the analysis of the target language,that is,the outcome of the translation project and some reflections on the translation project by the author.Through a careful study of this translation practice,the author hopes to provide a reference for the translation of similar works.
