A Report On The Translation Of Chapter 3 Of Understanding Family Law

This translation report is based on the translation of Chapter 3 of Understanding Family Law.As a kind of legal text,the language of this book is characterized by accuracy,preciseness and solemnity.Such characteristics should be displayed in E-C translation.However,due to the fact that English and Chinese have differences in grammar,expression habits and thinking models and the like,literal translation could not fully and precisely convey such characteristics.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,with readers' response of target texts as its core concept,emphasizes that translation is reproducing the closest natural equivalence of the source language message in the target language,which is also the requirement for legal translation.Hence,with the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the translation technique conversion of parts of speech is applied by extracting some examples from the source text to illustrate how to make the target text accord with the expression habits of the target language and the reading habits of target receptors.Such analysis proves that conversion of parts of speech is quite an essential translation technique in practice,which can make the target text more natural,fluent and authentic,and achieve proper equivalence on content between the source text and the target text.It is hoped that this translation report,focused on study conversion of part of speech,can offer some practical references to the translation of legal texts in the future.
