With the vigorous development of museum community in China, the art concept delivered by the museum has been gradually shifted to diversification and conceptualization, and there arises a museum design concept of “audience-oriented”.Thus,the means of museum's visual expression is also being more diverse along with the constant involvement of high-tech and new media.Since 2015,virtual reality technology has re-entered the public's vision and has become a new means of expression. The combination of virtual reality technology and museums can significantly enhance the effectiveness of museum education. However, the related applications of virtual reality are still at the primary development stage. How to better integrate the virtual reality technology with the museum display design has become an urgent subject to be explored and practiced. This dissertation takes the virtual reality display project as the research object and uses the current excellent application cases of virtual reality to deeply explore the design elements of the museum virtual reality display project, aiming to seek a reasonable design method to deal with the interactive changes brought by virtual reality and provide a better experience for museum tour.Firstly, the current developing status of museums in our country, along with the display design issues are analyzed in this dissertation.Based on the essential characteristics of virtual reality, the advantages and necessity of virtual reality applied to museums are discussed.Secondly, the design elements of the museum virtual reality display project are deeply dissected.Starting from the broadcasting educational goal of the museum, this dissertation closely focuses on the “audience-oriented” design concept, combining the concepts of embodied cognition, cognitive psychology, and human factors engineering to conduct a detailed analysis from the three elements of the audience, the environment, and technology.Among these three elements, the audience is the core element including multiple dimensions of cognition, sensory, behavior, emotion, and evaluation, while the environment and the audience play a complementary role.Nevertheless, because the development of virtual reality technology seems to have a bottleneck during this period, the limitation of technology has also had a great impact on the design of virtual reality exhibition items. Finally, based on the three design elements of the audience, environment and technology, summarizes a set of design strategies which can be used for the museum virtual reality display project, including the unity of the whole and the individual, the compliance with the audience's psychological requirements, the creation of a realistic environment, and the emphasis on display content planning. The unity of the whole and the individual includes demassification design, emphasis on integration with the environment, selection of appropriate hardware.;the compliance with the audience's psychological requirements includes conforming to the audience's selfrecognition, reducing the audience's cognitive load and reducing the fatigue feelings;the creation of a realistic environment includes improving the sense of reality, interactive naturalness and the use of motional bionic agent;the emphasis on display content planning includes content closely linked to the own characteristics, the use of narrative to enhance interest and the coordination of display forms and content. In addition, taking the Tripitaka Hall of Porcelain Tower of Nanjing as a prototype,HTC Vive as the use environment,a virtual reality display project was designed to further practice and verify the research subject of this dissertation, which organically combines the three elements of the audience, the environment, and the technology into an entirety and creates a complete visual reality exhibit item to be a new exploration to increase the dissemination effect of museum exhibitions.
