This translation report is from Tom Sharpe's novel The Great Pursuit. This novel is a description of Frensic's business story with vivid language and lively twists and turns of an ironic story. This translation report has chosen the novel's Chapter One to Chapter Four to translate, which mainly describes Frensic's career life. The translator does the translation of the novel to adopt ironic flavor to answer some wider social questions, which would be useful to readers both as an inspiration and as a moral lesson.Considering the writing style of the novel, the translator chooses the skopos theory as the guiding theory of this translation report, which highlights the purpose of translation. The skopos theory was put forward by Hans.J.Vemeer in the 1970's.The theory proclaims that the ends and purposes of the translation justify the means and strategies in the translation. With the skopos theory, the whole translation report will elaborate the translation process of The Great Pursuit, which mainly consists of five parts, which are task description, process description, theoretical guideline for translation:skopos theory, case analysis and conclusion.During the translation process, the translator follows the guidance of skopos theory, especially the three key principles flexibly and comprehensively to discuss the translation phenomenon, outputting an ideal version of translation.By writing the report, the translator not only deepens his understanding of translation practice and sums up some translation skills, but also improves his awareness of the necessary qualities for a good translator. The report will lay the foundation for the translator to work on the translation of related material.
