| As part of China's push for the growth of high-tech industries in recent years,many municipal governments have been endeavoring to draw foreign investment and businesses into local high-tech industrial parks.To this end,the government must have in place an English version of the original park website for English-speaking audience,especially potential investors who are considering doing business in China.“News” or “Updates” part on the whole webpage is a good window for foreign investors to identify the value and growth potential of the park.Thus,qualified translators are needed in this endeavor to make sure the core messages that park updates are trying to communicate are conveyed through careful trans-editing work.The reality is that many translators are not initially trained for this work and thus find themselves getting lost in the process.Yet things get easier for them with ready-to-use parallel texts on the “News” part of some similar foreign industrial parks.Translators can learn from these examples and keep improving their trans-editing skills.This thesis examines the trans-editing work of the updates on the English website launched by the Nantong National High-tech Industrial Development Zone.The translator must address three types of problems before starting his or her work: 1)lengthy titles suffering from information overload and unwanted metaphors or antithesis;2)ambiguous lead;3)ill-structured body.Based on the proper reference to some English parallel texts,some trans-editing rules are proposed to solve the three problems.The thesis also discusses how to write caption for a news picture.The case study is intended to help translators who are working in the journalism setting,and more importantly,to facilitate the park's endeavor to spur local economic development. |
