The Muti-Angle Study On "Bu Ye Jiu (X) Ma?" Rhetorical Question

Rhetorical question is one of the very common sentence pattern in Chinese,that is why so many scholars had been working hard on it and obtained rich research results in both macroscopic and microscopic area.Guided by the three planes theory(syntax,semantics and pragmatics),based on the previous research results,this paper will be elaborated rhetorical question "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?"from the following six chapters:Chapter 1:This part of the thesis reviews the research results on rhetorical question in the academic,mainly focus on "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?" and related studies.Then,summarize the grammatical meaning and pragmatic function of rhetorical question according to existing research.On this basis we will put forward the main points.Chapter 2:This part of the thesis respectively analyzes each components of "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?".First of all,the constant term "bu" in this sentence is used to mean non-negative,which is different from negative adverb "mei" and "meiyou".Conclude this comparison,we will know "bu" plays an important role in the rhetorical question.Secondly,the term "ye" can express objective similarity and subjective modality.Thirdly,analyzes the characteristics of "jiu",then the category of variable X.At last,we will discuss omission of question modal particle "ma" and its relationship between another"ma" and "me".Chapter 3:This part of the thesis will study semantics of "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?".Firstly,summarizes the different semantic features of variable X and its affection to the whole sentence.Then,analyzes the restriction to entering the sentence pattern.Finally,sums up the meaning of the sentence and abstracts the semantics of the structure.Chapter 4:This part of the thesis will research the pragmatic function and pragmatic value of "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?".In terms of pragmatic function,this rhetorical question can used to express reminding,confirming,disapproving and dismissive.In terms of pragmatic value,its peculiarity can reflected in these three aspects:suggestive,implicit,courtesy and impoliteness.Chapter 5:This part of the thesis will compare the structure "Bu ye jiu(X)ma?"with "Bu jiu(X)ma?" so as to find out their similarities and differences.Because of resemblance on language form,both can show definite meaning with negative sentence,can emphasize the obvious facts in conditional sentences,can indicate small subjective amount.These similarities make these two sentences have the ability to exchange in language facts,which brings out some common pragmatic functions.However,"ye" has a variety of functions which make these two sentences have subtle difference on semantically but cannot be ignored.Chapter 6:This part will draw a conclusion and point out the existing problems.
