A Comparative Study Of Verb Reduplicationbetween Chinese And Thai

With the continuous promotion of Chinese language in China,Chinese is increasingly used throughout the world.Verbs are an important part of Chinese and Thai word classes.Chinese and Thai verb reduplication is the most frequently used in daily life,especially inspoken language.When verbs are reduplicated,the meanings of the verbs will change.The verb reduplication in Chinese and Thai has similarities and differences in terms of forms,phonology,grammatical meanings,and syntactic functions.This research compares verb reduplication forms between Chinese and Thai.The research is divided into six chapters as follows:Introduction:This part introduces the significance of the research topic,the research findings,the research content and source of corpus,research purposes and methods.The first chapter contains grammatical features and classification of verbs in Chinese and Thai.In addition,it provides and summarizes the definition of verbs,the classification of verbs,and the grammatical features of verbs in Chinese and Thai.The second chapter deals with a comparison of verb reduplication in Chinese and Thai.Chinese verb reduplication forms are the AA form which changes to the A-A form and the A ? A form.Furthermore,the AABB form and ABAB form are found.Thai verb reduplication forms include the AA form,AA tone changing form,AABB form,ABAB form,and ABAB tone changing form.The classification of light and heavy pronunciation of the two languages is also discussed.The third chapter concerns the comparison of grammatical meanings of verb reduplication in Chinese and Thai,together with the similarity and dissimilarity in grammatical meanings of verb reduplication in Chinese and Thai.The AA form is a form which shows the basic and grammatical meanings of the Chinese-Thai verb reduplication form.However,the similarity of Thai and Chinese verb reduplication forms indicates different meanings,such as ABAB form.That is,in Chinese,verbs are used to show a short amount of time,to try to do something,and to indicate a high level.In Thai,these verbs are only used to repeat meaning.Chinese and Thai have the same grammatical meaning,but in different forms.For example,to repeating meaning,the former only has the form of AABB,while the latter uses the form of AA,AABB and ABAB.The fourth chapter concerns the syntactic function of reduplication of Chinese and Thai verbs.The common feature of Chinese and Thai verb reduplication is that it is able to be a predicate and verb modifier.The Chinese verb reduplication is mainly used as predicates and rarely used in as subjects,objects,noun modifiers,and complements.However,the reduplication of Thai verbs is able to be used in only two grammatical functions,a predicate and verb modifier.Due to the inability to use verb reduplication,there are differences between Chinese and Thai languages.It is obvious that verb reduplication in the Chinese language cannot be used in the ongoing state,the simultaneous state,and with auxiliary verbs“?????";however,those in Chinese can be used in Thai.The fifth chapter is concerned with an analysis of common errors made by Thai students in learning Chinese verb reduplication.After analyzing the questionnaire survey on the use of Chinese verbs by Thai students,it demonstrates that Thai students have made three common errors,namely the form of verb reduplication,the meaning of verb reduplication,and syntactic function.The sixth chapter,the conclusion,contains the summary of Chinese and Thai verb reduplication research.
